In a Texas League game, a coach was struck in the head with a line drive and killed.
Those line drives travel fast - and when attending a minor league game, I've seen a few whiz by. A couple of people have even been hit. It's the reason why I would take the seat between the girl I took as my date and the plate.
This is tragic all around.

It's a real tragedy. He coached for the Tulsa Drillers (Rockies affiliate) and had two little boys, and a third child due in October. I wonder if we aren't going to see a push for the base coaches (and maybe umpires) to wear batting helmets in the field. The players don't...except for the odd exception like Olerud...but at least they have gloves to try to protect themselves.

This seems to be an utterly sensible idea. Standing around completely unprotected while hard projectiles fly around at high speed is akin to playing Russian Roulette.
