Stabbing the Troops in the Back: Why "Friendly" Fire Isn't

Well, we now have another threat to abandon the troops and their mission. This time, it's from "conservatives."

Their message is simple: either Bush backs down on supporting immigration reform, or they will pull the plug on funding for Iraq.

"Treason doth not prosper, for what's the reason? For if it doth prosper, none dare call it treason."

Well, I dare call it treason.

It's official. I'm no longer a conservative. I'm a Donald Bellisario Republican--national security first, last, and always, and to hell with everything (and everyone) else.

To paraphrase Ronald Reagan, I haven't left conservatism. Conservatism left me.

Though I disagree with you on the merits of the Senate immigration bill, I am in complete agreement that it is despicable to hold support of the troops hostage in opposition to it.

However, you blame this on conservatives. The article you link quotes Peter King making the "threat"...and according to the ACU he is one of the most liberal Republicans in the House (bottom 10%). So I'm not sure that it's the conservatives who should bear all of the onus on this. Still if any so-called conservatives are making such threats, they deserve to be strongly rebuked and then promptly un-elected. Support for the troops trumps any internal disagreement period.

Other Republicans were more veiled in their remarks, but the threats are there.

Yes, Ken. It was actually Rush Limbaugh who issued the first veiled threat. Several weeks ago already.

By the way, I see the Townhall Peppermint thread is still available. What do you make of the fact that it was posted April 10 and all the comments are between April 10 and 12? Nothing seems to pop up when searching for "Peppermints Place" at Townhall, although the setup over there is truly a baffling mess.

As I do not listen to that draft-dodging, pill-popping professional bloviator, I did not know that.

The more I hear of Mr. Limbaugh, the more I despise him.

I found it late.

Try "Peppermint's Place" (with apostrophe). Last post that I saw was on June 22nd.

Right, I ended my affair with Rush over a year ago, but still read occasional transcripts. His blackmail was carefully delivered so as to deliver the ultimatum while avoiding the appearance of instigating.

Same with Laura Ingraham's tiptoeing into New World Order conspiracy madness... I caught her for 15 min. in the car last week... she pulls half her punch, and sort of backs into it like a coward, but her intent is unmistakable: 'Now folks, I've been hearing lots of you warn me about George Bush and the New World Order for years yada yada... and now I have to tell you, sadly, it is no longer sounding crazy to me at all...'

P.S. I wonder if the FBI is keeping an eye on Peppermint...

I see a reference to Peppermint in a Townhall blog titled "After the Apocalypse" (perfect) and ohmigod, a bunch of twisted sisters playing some game of "Tag" and other weird stuff. I guess Townhall is the hangout for all the kids who played Dungeons & Dragons growing up, but couldn't get quite get past that phase. It seems they have their own lexicon as well... as does Malkin and some of her cult action figure colleagues.

I could see this coming. Now the Right has finally joined the "Bash Bush, and the heck with 9/11" crowd. Must be such a relief to stop resisting the tide.

Truly unbelievable, isn't it? Immigration has become such an absurdly hot issue to the GOP that apparently the War on Terror doesn't matter anymore; apparently the GOP also thinks this is just "Bush's War."

Also, I remember that the GOP also tried a similar stunt during the Dubai Ports World mess -- alienate a Middle Eastern ally by humiliating them in public, or give up funding for the troops in Iraq.

And to think many on the Right are accusing "Jorge" of treason.

Other than President Bush, there really is no one in Washington I care to root for.
